Everything you need to run a successful parking operation

January 27, 2025

Ivy Alenton joined XA Security back in 2022, and since then, she’s made huge strides in her career. With her determination and drive, she’s now leading our Parking Division as the Parking Operations Coordinator. Ivy’s work ethic and leadership style truly exemplify what it means to Be Pro, and she's thrilled to share her insights on running a successful parking operation.

Career growth for security guards

My journey with XA began in early 2022 as an event security guard, and from my very first shift—working a Calgary Flames game—I knew I had found a place where I could grow. Within six months, I was promoted to Event Security Supervisor, and soon after, I expanded my experience by taking on roles with the Parking Division,Green Event Services, and XA Live crew.

Each new opportunity deepened my understanding of XA and strengthened my leadership skills. By May 2022, I had my first parking shift at the Grey Eagle Event Centre, and by November, I was supervising parking operations for a sold-out show. A year later, I stepped into the role of Parking Operations Coordinator, where I’ve focused on improving communication, collaboration, and team culture in the Parking Division.

What has inspired me most is the potential I’ve seen—not just for myself, but for my team at XA. From the start, I believed that my skills, dedication, and passion could contribute to meaningful improvements within the company, and I’m grateful that my supervisors and Chris, our CEO, believed in me too. XA’s mission and values align so closely with my own, and it’s exciting to be part of a team that prioritizes professionalism and creates opportunities for its people. Looking to build your career in security? XA offers the ideal environment for growth.

What makes a great parking team?

When hiring for the Parking Division, I look for more than just skills—I look for commitment, a positive attitude, adaptability, strong communication, and excellent customer service. My goal isn’t just to fill roles but to build a team that reflects our company values and delivers the best possible experience for our clients and event attendees.

I want every team member to feel empowered to grow, share ideas, and contribute to improving how we provide parking services and collaborate as a team. Whether during pre-shift meetings or downtime, I use every opportunity to reinforce the culture I want to build. By setting clear expectations and encouraging open and honest feedback, I’ve learned that my team’s focus mirrors my own. Sometimes, that means offering an extra piece of positive feedback after a challenging interaction or identifying an opportunity for growth.

Leading by example is key to making my feedback meaningful. During shifts, I demonstrate how to efficiently and safely direct traffic in busy parking lots and pair experienced team members with newer ones to foster mentorship and collaboration. Most importantly, I strive to create a supportive and enjoyable environment—one that makes everyone look forward to coming back for the next event.

Balancing assertiveness and customer service

Providing parking services require striking the right balance between confidence and exceptional customer service. Maintaining a professional demeanour and a confident posture sets the tone, helping patrons see us as both approachable and in control.

To me, assertiveness is about leading with confidence and composure, not confrontation. It means setting clear expectations, staying calm under pressure, and treating every attendee with respect. When we master this balance, we create a safe, organized, and positive experience for everyone.

Clear communication, steady eye contact, a friendly smile, and a calm yet authoritative tone go a long way in gaining cooperation. When we lead with professionalism and positivity, we not only ensure smooth operations but also leave a lasting, positive impression on event attendees.

Teamwork

Teamwork is the foundation of successful parking operations. We’re not just managing vehicles—we’re creating a safe, efficient, and welcoming experience for event attendees while promoting responsible driving practices before and after events.

The talented and highly skilled team in the Parking Division works hard to foster an environment of mutual respect—among colleagues, drivers, and event attendees. We go the extra mile to support one another, knowing that when challenges arise, we can rely on our teammates and supervisors for guidance and assistance.

During high-pressure events, clear communication is key. Staying connected through radios and using precise hand signals ensures smooth and safe traffic flow. Challenges can arise at any moment, but by remaining calm, proactive, and adaptable, we can handle any situation with confidence.

Respect and support are at the heart of a strong team. Acknowledging each other’s efforts, offering help when needed, and maintaining a positive work environment make all the difference. When we work together effectively, it’s not just our operations that thrive—it’s the experience for everyone involved, from our team to event attendees and clients.
